The Mould and Deckle Process
The mould and deckle are core tools in hand papermaking.
The mould is the framed mesh screen that catches the suspended fibers.
The deckle is the top frame that defines sheet size and creates the deckled edge.
The process follows these steps:
Fiber pulp is suspended evenly in water.
The mould and deckle are dipped horizontally into the vat.
The screen lifts, capturing fibers in a thin layer.
Water drains through the mesh.
The wet sheet is transferred (couched) onto felt.
Sheets are pressed and air dried.
This process reforms discarded fiber into stable, workable substrate.
